When you say “okay”, do you really mean “no?”

The current tidal wave of sexual harassment allegations has opened the door to a larger shared reckoning. Many women are finding a voice that lets them push back and share their stories. Others are still trying to understand how to cope with this kind of behavior, which can foster a climate of fear and unease in both work and life. Our socialization makes changing these patterns very difficult.

How do we respond to unwanted attention? Should we expect those in charge of the workplace to take action and manage this kind of behavior and create a safe climate for women? Recognizing and publicizing bad behavior is one thing. Actually coping with it in real life is another question altogether. Changing deeply embedded patterns is not easy. Individually, we can begin to learn a few strategies that can, with practice, help bring a confidence into our work and social lives.

In this presentation, we’ll look at the problem of sexual harassment and why it is so prevalent. We’ll consider the ways we deal with it in how we respond and how we often have no choice but to “go along to get along”. We’ll do a few simple exercises to start shifting our own internal response mechanisms. We’ll learn why “OKAY” is not a good word, and why learning to say “NO” can be a powerful force for changing not just our own workplace environment, but our larger life as well.
