Tips for Customizing Zoom as a Participant
- Zoom released another update. If you have not logged in recently, please allow a few extra minutes to download and install the latest version.
- Click the meeting conference link to join the meeting at least 5 minutes before the start time. Use the time to get comfortable and adjust your screen and audio controls.
- For the best experience – and so we can see each other, we encourage you to to download the Zoom desktop app and participate by computer. (The zoom mobile app does not offer as many options.)
- You control the appearance of your display. With the Zoom desktop app open, select “Zoom.us/Preferences” to open the Settings available to you.
- Under Video Settings, be sure “Always display participant’s name on their video” is selected.
- In Audio Settings, many people choose to enable “Press and hold SPACE key to temporarily unmute” versus having to click on the microphone or hit multiple keys to unmute. Please mute yourself when not speaking to avoid background noise.
- In Share Screen Settings, you may want to select “Side-by-side Mode” so you can simultaneously view participants on the right and the speaker’s shared screen on the left. (If you have dual monitors, under “General” Settings each monitor can be set to display either video or shared screens.)
- During the meeting, you can adjust your settings in two places:
- Meeting controls generally appear at the bottom of your screen. You can select “Gallery view” so you can see small videos of all participants, or you can select “Speaker view” to see only the person speaking.
- If the person speaking is also sharing her PowerPoint on screen and you want to vary the size of either the screen or her video, you can hover over the space between the two until a resizing icon appears and drag to enlarge either the video or the screen share/PowerPoint.
