As we enter into the season of gratitude, WBON would like to thank you for your support this past year.  To those members who voted in our recent virtual annual meeting, thank you for taking the time to make your voice heard to grow our organization. Your votes, comments and involvement are what keep our organization strong.

Greetings from the Women Business Owners Network!

We hope everyone is enjoying this touch of cooler weather as we make our transition into fall. This season brings with it our annual WBON Fall Conference. More on that below, but first…

October is National Women’s Small Business Month. Established in 1988 with the Women’s Business Ownership Act, this legislation ended practices such as requiring male relatives to co-sign women entrepreneurs’ business loans. (Can you believe those days were not even 30 years ago!)  The act also established the Nation Women's Business Council, a non-partisan federal advisory council with lots of great resources for women entrepreneurs. From statistics about female business ownership to resources to help grow your business, check out what this agency is doing on the federal level to advance women’s business ownership.

In case you missed seeing the Gubernatorial Candidate Forum on Women’s Issues on September 24th, see what our candidates had to say about topics affecting Vermont women: Click Here

Now…to our UPCOMING CONFERENCE! This year’s conference is themed, Telling Your Story, and it is shaping up to be like no other event we’ve held in our 32-year history.  We are partnering with Change the Story and the Vermont Commission on Women to bring you an extraordinary and inspiring day. The conference is in Montpelier this year, at the Vermont State House and the Vermont History Museum, finishing up with an After Party at North Branch Café. We expect registration to reach record numbers, so don’t delay! Click Here to Register

With all that is happening right now in the realm of gender equity and women business ownership, WBON wants to give you as many opportunities to get involved as possible. One way we are hope to help you get involved in all that is happening right now, is by offering a NEW MEMBER COMBO PACKAGE – $100 off the price of membership when combined with conference attendance! What a great time to introduce friends or colleagues to WBON!

Here are the different options for our New Member + Conference Ticket Combo packages:

    • Startup Business - $100/year (Less $100 discount). No additional fees.
    • WBON New Member - $150/year (Less $100 discount). Additional $50 due at time of member registration
    • Supporting Member - $200/year (Less $100 discount). Additional $100 due at time of member registration

To make your business known in a bigger way, we are also offering Fall Conference Sponsorship opportunities. To learn more about becoming a sponsor Click Here

    Greetings from WBON!

While you may know WBON primarily for our events, chapter meetings, and policy work, WBON is also an important partner in many statewide initiatives affecting Vermont women. For example, WBON is honored to serve on the Advisory Council for the Vermont Commission on Women (VCW), an independent non-partisan state commission dedicated to advancing rights and opportunities for women in Vermont. As an Advisor, WBON provides a voice for women business owners, helping to inform the public education, coalition building and advocacy efforts undertaken by the Commission.

Last month, representatives from WBON attended the annual advisory council meeting to update the Commission and other advisory council members on WBON’s activities and some of the issues facing women business owners.

As a follow-up to that event, VCW let us know of their upcoming gubernatorial forum on women’s issues. They are soliciting questions from experts, organizations, and others. If you’d like to contribute any questions or comments on priorities for the next governor, visit their event page to make your voice heard: https://www.facebook.com/events/1727504210821792/

For this month’s member Q&A, we sat down with Amelia Gulkis of EnSave. This consulting firm owner shares her favorite business resources, the checklist she’s still looking for, and what makes her proud. A few of you are on deck to be featured in a future issue, and there’s plenty of room for more members to be highlighted in a future issue. Please email director@wbon.org to be featured in the newsletter or to ask any other questions of your board.

We hope things are going well in your lives and businesses as we close in on another quarter—hard to believe we are nearly at the halfway-mark of 2016, with summer just a few weeks away!

Many of you were interested in the independent contractor legislation discussion at the Spring Conference. Based on the feedback from all of you and on WBON’s public policy committee findings, WBON issued a joint statement with VBSR requesting the legislature to hold off on deciding on this legislation until the next biennium. Happily, the legislature did indeed table a decision on independent contractors until the next session, rather than rushing into a decision that will affect so many businesses in Vermont.

This is just one of the issues currently under consideration with WBON's public policy committee. If there are particular issues of importance to you, please use your policy committee as a resource!

Also on the policy front, perhaps you’ve heard of the new overtime rules issued by the Department of Labor. Do you have employees? If so, make sure you are up to speed on the new rules going into effect December 1: https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/final2016/
